Winter Skin Revival – 10 Tips for Glowing Skin

healthy skinThe New Year is usually full of resolutions, lots of motivation and questions. Here are 10 tips to get your skin in shape to look your absolute best for 2015.

1. Drink Water! Recommended amount is 8-10 8 oz. glasses per day. Increase intake for dryer climates, with exercise, and caffeine consumption. This helps to detoxify your body and skin of impurities. Water also helps with hydration, which attributes to that “healthy glow”. Think of it as moisturizing from within.

2. Exfoliate – As we age, cell turnover slows down and dead skin cells can give us a dull complexion. Exfoliating the face and the body 1-2 times per week helps get rid of the dull, dead top layers of skin. This allows moisturizers and serums to better penetrate the skin and helps your foundation glide on smoothly instead of sitting on top of flaky skin.  A great one to try is ExfoliKate by Kate Somerville.  Just think, you’ll be getting more out of the products you already use!

3. Lip Balm – One part of the face that is often neglected, the kisser. Scaly, dry lips are not attractive and are more prone to dryness in the winter. Treat them to some TLC with a good lip balm such as EOS Lip Balm, which are paraben and petrolatum free. Keep one in your purse, your car, your desk and the nightstand to make sure that they are always on hand. For a good exfoliation treatment apply a good amount of lip balm, rub lips together to work it into the lips, and use a soft bristled toothbrush or disposable mascara wand gently across the lips to exfoliate any dry, dead skin.

4. Cleanser – Believe it or not, most cleansers are to blame for dry skin. If they lather, they likely contain harsh surfactants and detergents that are drying your skin out. I know, we tend to associate cleanliness with that reach, sudsy lather, but you’re also stripping your skin in the process. 5. Eat Healthy– The best skin care is by eating healthy foods. These include fruits and vegetables. These food contains lots of nutrients that will bring nourishment to the skin. It promotes growth of newer cells getting rid of dry, rough dead skin cells. Diet paired with regular exercise works best to make skin firm and taught.

6. Sunscreen – Don’t forget to apply daily. An SPF of 30 is highly recommended for daily use. Reapply as necessary with outdoor activity. You can still get sunburned on a cloudy day in the winter. Nothing stings more than dry, sunburned skin. Don’t forget to include your neck and decollate. 7. Eyes – Use a good eye cream. The eye area dries out easily and is often neglected for moisturizer. Use one that is ophthalmologist tested and approved, it is less likely to irritate your eyes. 8. No Hot Water – We all love hot showers and baths, but it is super damaging to our skin. Wash your face with warm water, not hot. Hot water strips the skin of its natural lipids (oils) and the hotter the water, the greater the damage. If your skin is pink or red from the water then it is too hot.

9. Create Humidity – Humidifiers get moisture into the air and help prevent dry skin. Place a couple throughout your home for an even distribution of humidity. Also, do a facial steam treatment once a week. You can do this simply by boiling water, then pouring it into a large bowl. Next, place a towel over the back of your head as you lean over with your face towards the bowl. Do this for about 5-10 minutes. Your skin will be very happy! However, don’t be alarmed if you see a few blemishes appear – the steam helps to open your pores, bringing bacteria to the surface and detoxifying your pores. This is a good thing.

10. Less Makeup – Believe it or not, a majority of makeup contains a lot of common skin irritants (like talc). Give your skin a rest and don’t wear makeup if it’s really not necessary. Makeup tends to clog pores, suffocating your skin of oxygen. A common offender of this is found at the gym. Take a minute and remove all of your face makeup off before you work out and wash it well afterwards. Sweat opens your pores, allowing makeup and bacteria to deeply penetrate them, causing blackheads and blemishes. Even better reason to have a fresh face forward!
